Xi'an

yes. after much stalling tj's mum and i finally made our way down to china. first a 0120 flight to beijing then transfer to Xi'an. by the time we reached the hospital (Shaanxi people's hospital) it was already 1330. what we saw there made our hearts ache so much...

the touted biggest hospital in the area is super old and dirty. lights don't work, ppl smoke everywhere, walk in and out etc. tj's in the ICU, which is unlike ours in s'pore, is a room shared w six ppl. other patients include those gg for chemo, just finished operation and those gg to die... and each patient can only have 1 family member visit for 5 minutes... so his mum went, and when she came out, the story she told me made my heart go out to him...

he was in ok spirits, but knowing him, he tends to put out an okay outward appearance rather than to burden ppl and/or make them unhappy... he hasn't bathed/washed/changed his clothes since monday (the accident) and just been thru a treacherous 6 hr ambulance ride to xi'an, where his parent's heart dropped everytime they heard the phone ring... he made it safe, vital stats are stabilising and improving... but he cannot eat, drink, move or use the phone,as such, he just lies there and watches all the dying ppl arnd him. imagine how tt will affect ur mood...

and yah, we finally got a clearer picture from the doctor. basically, his broken hip is no longer an issue, as in it wasn't disaligned tt much, so even if he didn't do anything to it, it'll be fine. but as a result of the thingie falling onto him, his internal organs were hurt... so now his spleen, liver and kidney are bleeding. they've stabilised yes, but yah, any sudden movement or rupture could cost his life. i didn't know the extent of his injuries until now... and while they did say he's improving, they can't be sure, and proceeded to tell us horror stories abt y we shdn't insist on moving him out of ICU.

so we waited and waitied to see him, since ICU is shared, they have this v strict rule, tt each patient can only have family members visit for 5 minutes, and ICU visiting hours are only from 3 - 4 pm each day. so only his mum went... and it was like so near yet so far... i already mentally prepared wat to say to him, but was turned away at the door. felt super upset, and finally broke down and cried in the car... not a good move, supposed to stay strong esp for auntie...

worried for her, she hasn't slept well in days, didn't sleep on the plane ride, drank coffee and ended up with a bad headache. then she told me tt she kept regretting encouraging him to go for this job, a sentiment i totally shared... yet she was trying to comfort me, when i can only imagine how bad she feels, coupled w the fact tt uncle's being a v kancheong spider abt the whole thing. keeps calling to get updates from us when we don't really have anything to tell him, and we pad the truth so he won't get worried

writing this from my v good room in sheraton hotel xi'an. tj's company is treating us well, taking care of our food, lodging, transfers etc. as i speak, i'm using the broadband internet connection on the project manager's spare computer (he v kindly lent it to me so we could skype) and i feel guilty, for staying in such a nice place, eating not too bad food... since we can only visit him at 3pm, we're probably gg sightseeing arnd xi'an in the morning. but honestly, i'm not in the mood to, and it only adds to the feeling of utter helplessness and uselessness tt i'm feeling right now. he's hurting, suffering, in such danger but yet i can't do anything abt it, not even hold his hand, smile and tell him everything will be all right... i just want to tell him tt he means the world to me, i need him to be patient and strong and brave for himself and for the both of us.

quite drained from the journey here which i only managed intermittent sleep. but yet not sleepy cos thinking abt alot of things... blaming myself for not telling him not to take up this job in the first place, letting him be stubborn, not being firmer on my stand to break up w him if he doesn't quit... thinking of how he'll be suffering on his b'day (19th) and christmas. while we are hopeful, i think he'll really only be relieved on the day he returns to s'pore, even if it means a long stay in s'pore's hospitals... and now, we're just all getting ready for the timetable and shifts so tt there'll always be someone here w him

i now have ownership of all his stuff... looking thru his bag i found chippy and daley... and when i saw them, i was so sad, cos i gave them to him as angels to accompany him on all his trips away from me and now he doesn't have them...

selfish me, before the accident i kept hinting tt i want a v nice xmas present... now all i want is for him to make a speedy recovery.

guilt, frustration, worry, anxiety, sadness, heartache...

standing in

hmmm.. as of now, car shld be waiting for her connecting flight to xi'an. hope they've figured out where to go when they reach..

as for tj.. yay! he finally made his way to the hospital! so tats one thing less to worry abt..hope they get all their medical skills, equipment and watever else right this time round..

off to xi'an

finally we decided to not sit back anymore and head down to china to see tj. abt time. i shd've been more assertive and maybe we'll be there earlier. went to office tdy to settle stuff, get my ticket etc. and took half day to settle other stuff, last minute shopping for winterwear.

on his condition, well he's on his 4th bag of blood... and though the internal bleeding was not yet stablised, they decided to move him to xi'an after a conference call btwn the doctors and tj's bone specialist uncle. it's a pretty big risk, cos xi'an is a 5 hr ambulance ride away, and i'm not tt keen on him travelling on china highways... plus if the membrane (of the liver) ruptures, it'll be v v v jialat. but yah, after much consideration they decided to go ahead. but my poor tj is now v confused w all the change in instructions... and i'm v v worried as well... in the morning he sounded quite his usual self on the phone, but as the info changes and changes, he seems more and more worried and even resigned to the situation... and tt just gets to me... and unlike wat his parents and bro think, tj doesn't call me tt much, all of my news comes from them, and he seldom sms-es too. and tt just leaves my imagination going wild... and my mood swings from depressed to super depressed...

so yeah, taking the 1am flight to beijing then transferring to xi'an to see him with his mum. though we won't be of much help there, i hope our presence gives him the moral support he needs... though i have to be strong and offer him the support he needs and not break down myself...

i'll be enlisting the help of yun to update in this blog so tt concerned friends can know of his condition better. tentatively i'll be back on 20th december, hpfully with him... poor dear, his bday on the 19th and xmas is coming... ;( i just hp he gets well soon...

update

after tons of screw-ups w the doctors and the stupid agency, they finally arrived like 2 days after the incident. and now conducting tests. poor tj just lying there in pain, not knowing wat's happening, not knowing if he actually can get to go home... all alone... and we're just passing msges arnd, his parents receive news from his company's safety + HR manager and pass on the news to me. and it sucks, cos news changes within minutes... we tot he's ok to fly home, but then suddenly cannot le. and now they discovered internal bleeding, his liver bleeding, which makes transporting him a big NO-NO now. so poor boy will still be there by himself

the initial idea was he gets to fly back. then we waited for the f$@@ed up doctor to make his way down to certify him fit to fly. but now they found the internal bleeding, i don't think he'l make it back anytime soon. i know he wants someone to be there, maybe not me, but at least his parents, which is y i'm already on standby, not sure y we're still here waiting, even if he does transfer hospitals in the end, at least we're in china and are nearer and can just make it to whichever hospital he ends up in right? so we're just here waiting, and i'm getting more and more anxious and worried...

the worst feeling in the world

the worst feeling in the world is when you're bathing and your phone rings and you know it's your darling but you wonder y he's calling so many times when he's still supposed to be working and he's using his s'pore line to call. something must be wrong but you don't know what so you carry on bathing. next his parents start calling you like mad, and finally you pick up the phone... and you hear the bad news:

your baby's in an accident all the way in china, he broke his hip bone and his face now requires stitches. and all this while you keep telling him to be careful, to quit his stupid job cos it's just not worth it... but he wanna prove himself so you grudgingly let him go... and now he's hurt... and you hurt too... but you can't cry cos you don't want him to worry, but yet you worry and are upset... you want him to come home, but not this way... he's ok but his bone will have to be pulled in place only tomorrow noon cos the doctor is not in the hospital, only the substitute doctor (what kinda STOOPID hospital does china have?) and after tt you have no idea when he's coming back, and you're worried and you just want him to come home but you don't know if he's stable enough to make the journey back...

you just wanna cry but you can't... like something stuck inside...

Apologies for being me

This is one of those posts where I have tons to say but don’t know how… this is one of those days also tt I wake up wanting to go back to sleep, drag myself to work, find out my boss is on urgent leave, and then I totally don’t feel like doing any work. Which is the reason for this rambling post…

I try, to be the one, cheerleader-confidant-advisor-lover all rolled into one. And yes, your sweet words keep me afloat, sustain me till your next return and then you proceed to humour me, to make me feel impt, cherished and treasured… Yes it works… sometimes. But only when you’re back I guess…

Not all of it is ur fault. Ur job takes a lot out of you. I know it’s tough to have a physically demanding job, work 12-hr shifts for 35 days straight with no rest in between. It must suck, not having tv to watch, not being able to chill with friends over ice cold beer, being so far away in a forsaken land, away from friends and family, in the freezing cold. And you are tired at the end of the day, and discouraged cos of the job scope and nature…

It’s difficult, knowing you’re working hard, feeling discouraged, not getting paid enough, not being able to live up to your OWN expectations, feeling tt ur job sucks, hearing u say tt u and ur colleagues agree tt u can’t stay long in the job… and I have to console u, cheer u on, tell u tt u can do it… while putting my own feelings aside, of me starting to feel unhappy in this job cos little gets done and I have little power to change things, of me feeling lonely, of me hating how my schedule revolves around urs when you’re back briefly…

You tell me I’m sweet, I’m the most important person in the world… but yet when I feel upset at night and just want to hear your comforting voice, I can’t, because it’s late, you’re already sleeping, and I don’t wanna disturb you. Because if I do, I’ll end up feeling bad, apologizing for waking you up… for ur tiredness the next day… and it becomes my fault for just wanting what I should get from my bf…

The Winds of Change

Ok so my mum went to hire a fengshui shifu to take a look at our house in an attempt to improve the business of my dad’s company. So he came, recommended a few changes, and yes so now my house is in a state of mess.

Everyone has to change room. So now I’ve shifted to my parent’s room, my sisters shift to my room, and my parents go to the sisters’ room. We spent yesterday afternoon shifting stuff, and dismantling beds + shifting king size mattresses are no joke I tell you. Not to mention inhaling the gigantic dust bunnies generated (I wonder what the maids have been doing all these while). After shifting everything not enough, must still shift cupboards from downstairs and my maid’s room upstairs for better luck. It’s like musical chairs, only with furniture. A bitch I can tell you. And we haven’t even started moving stuff in the wardrobe (clothes etc)

So now everyone is not happy:

1) Sisters. Now their room is a good ¾ of the original size, they have to squeeze two beds and two tables leaving them with little room to walk or dump more rubbish. Plus now their wardrobe size is halved, meaning they have to walk to my room to take clothes. AND they no longer have a tv. Worse, cos of fengshui, cheryl’s table is now at some weird 45 deg angle, making the room look smaller than it actually is.

2) Me. Now that my room is squarish, the placement of all cupboards and bed have to be by the wall (since fengshui man already dictated tt my bed has to flush against the wall.) This leaves me with a nice big sitting area but everything else looks weird cos I’m just pushing all cupboards to the wall. I now have a TV and a toilet in my room (was happily watching movies on hbo the whole of last nite) but then the toilet means my parents will come in every now and then to use it (and NOT close the door after) meaning I have less privacy and a stinky room. And I kept questioning the choice of furniture placement cos I always feel tt fengshui is supposed to bring harmony etc but I’m v v sure placing tables at 45degree angle will only cause ppl to bump into it more etc.

3) Parents. Dad now cannot come into his toilet and has to use the common toilet if he so wishes in the wee hours of the morning. And you know guys when they’re sleepy (or not) they tend to “spray” on the toilet seat. 20+ years of using an all girls’ toilet means we do not have the habit of lifting the seat up… so yah… Mum is pissed cos we’re totally not supportive (I keep questioning stuff) and she ends up shifting a lot of things by herself.

4) Maid. She has to endure my mum’s screams (mum’s a bitch tt way), help shift the heavy stuff, clean tons of dust bunnies, rearrange everything back etc. especially since nobody else really gives a damn.

I hope it’s just teething problems. We still have to shift our wardrobe and rearrange our stuff. Stupid fengshui man. All that trouble better count for something…

butterfly

When you love someone so deeply
They become your life
It's easy to succumb to overwhelming fears inside
Blindly I imagined I could
Keep you under glass
Now I understand to hold you
I must open up my hands and watch you rise

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be, so spread your wings and fly
Butterfly

I have learned that beauty
Has to flourish in the light
Wild horses run unbridled
Or their spirit dies
You have given me the courage
To be all that I can
And I truly feel your heart will
Lead you back to me when you're ready to land

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me, we truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly butterfly

I can't pretend these tears
Aren't overflowing steadily
I can't prevent this hurt from
Almost overtaking me
But I will stand and say goodbye
For you'll never be mine
Until you know the way it feels to fly

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
Butterfly

Random

Haven’t updated in a while, busy spending time w tj while he’s back, nursing my flu etc. still having the flu, not surprising considering the sucky weather, but yeah, this morning the sky outside my office looks beautiful, a lovely blue, with only wispy clouds and a cool breeze thanks to last night’s rain. I’m dreaming of a holiday! Tj is most prob going to San Antonio in March 07, and I’m most prob going to meet him in US and we’ll go on our own holiday! And I’ll be going on my free ticket, which only means I got more cash to spend there! Hehe. Excited, but tt’s still a while to go…

My left knee is really acting up, I’m not sure why also, used to be that wearing high-heels for one full day will trigger it, but after macritchie my knee aches everyday. Not so much the knee, but the thigh muscles near it, dunno how to explain also. So like an older lady, I have to rely on glucosamine cream and tablets. Sighz. And not wear my pretty heels. I need pretty flats! Any suggestions where to get those?

Blogging for the sake of blogging. Sleepy and bored at work. Sigh. My poor tj is working 12 hr shifts everyday, sometimes even longer cos he pia. I’m just glad he’s on morning shift so at least I get to speak to him at night. Will have to make do I guess…

Dreaming of a holiday, dreaming of Christmas, dreaming of you coming back again…

Back to work, last minute scheduled meeting at 3pm that I have to prepare for…

Crazy Weekend

decided to finally go for the treetop walk w tj cos he's never been there, i've already been there last year with jkaiser. quite fun lah i feel, nice walk in nature plus tj and i have been whining for the longest time abt how we shd both get off our lazy asses and go do some exercise.

so yes, we reached macritchie at 12pm (we ended late the previous nite so couldn't really wake up). a nice walk in, it was nice and warm, there was the occasional rumble of thunder but it sounded like it was far away so we ignored it. i found out tt tj has never really been in macritchie cos apparently schools in the east don't hold cross country runs in macritchie, only in east coast park etc. he was quite amazed at the beauty of macritchie and with the fact tt ppl could canoe there, and i related jkaiser's canoeing adventure to him.

well i'm pretty out of shape and my left knee has been giving me trouble these days, but no big worries as we walked and talked, but the sky grew progressively darker, but we went on... tj's sandals gave way 800 m from the treetop walk, but we continued cos we were so close... and we made it, the view was lovely as usual, but cos the wind was quite strong the bridge was quite unsteady so i didn't enjoy it as much this time arnd. in fact just wanted to get out of there. we got off the bridge, and then it started to rain, moderate at first, then it really started to pour. luckily we both brought brollies, there was an ang moh family who didn't and were really quite wet. dunno wat happened to them, we overtook them. brollies weren't much use in tt weather, and water also got into our bags (we both cleverly put our hp, wallet and his camera in the outer pocket, bad move cos they all got slightly wet) after 30 min of pouring rain, we made it to the ranger station, where there was approx 20 ppl there seeking refuge from the rain. we took a break from the rain, had some food (sandwiches never tasted tt good) after another 30 min of waiting/napping/eating the rain got smaller, and we decided to make our getaway. which consisted of another 1.5 hrs of walking towards civilisation (towards island country club) in hopes of getting a cab. we finally did, and headed home to shower etc.

after a brief rest, we took a bus to parkway to get a cake for yun, then proceeded to dinner at some tze char place. after tt we made it to yun's place at 9 to surprise her. she didn't know we were coming, but i think she guessed we're all acting weird. so yah, ade, del, joce, tj and i went up to her place complete w cake and present. hope she liked her mini "surprise". pics!

after cake cutting, we proceeded to phuture. music wasn't bad, but aiyah, nobody lancing leh, so sianz, we left at 12.30 cos there really was nobody dancing! so bored. so bak kut teh supper is the best solution. hehe. by then i was absolutely bushed. happy b'day yun!

AIC

a busy two weeks, went on course on wed - fri (8-10 nov). airline industry course, the title speaks for itself. enjoyed it tremendously, it's always nice to meet diff ppl working in the same big organisation to learn abt the grass on the other side. our group had a lady from Sydney office, she's a cool character, her family hailed all the way from croatia but she's been living in Sydney for a v long time. we also had ppl from the taipei and san fransciso office. not to mention pilots and the Divisional Vice President was in our team too. but he was pretty nice.

so yes, the course is fun but shiong also, cos of the management game we had to "play". basically we were gonna start a new airline with USD50 mil to fly routes w/i SEA. and yah all in the span of 2 afternoons. we ended up staying till 9pm to rush it out. but it was super fun and an "always amazing" experience. and yeah, just in case u were wondering, if you really had USD50 mil, pls invest in something else. an airline is too much work for too little money in my opinion.

and yeah, we got to drink officially on the job! the beer was brought in to "lighten things up" during the session with senior management... and on the last day one of the pilots bought beer for some of us (i was hanging arnd waiting for tj to come pick me up) so it was fun chatting w pilots, they really are an interesting bunch, and friendly too. so everything ended on a nice note...

24th b'day

yupyupz, my bday came and went. a v good one this year. shall let the pics do the talking.

part 1: family

came back on 31 Oct to this: my living room was decorated with streamers and balloons!

we went jumbo seafood (serangoon gardens) for dinner. as usual, great seafood, great company. and thanks to the 2 additional guests, we managed to finish pretty much most of the food!

after tt we went home for cake-cutting. not really my bday yet, but who's gonna resist a yummy hazelnut ganache from rive gauche? and here is my "free" bouquet from prince flowers too! v nice of them to offer an apology bouquet for their boo-boo.

part 2: walk around the city

took leave frm 1 - 3 nov since tj's off anyway, so we went off to celebrate my bday. first up, lunch. wild rocket @ mount emily is good, delicious fusion food in a cosy setting. the set meal was quite worth it. refer to the food blog for details.

after lunch we proceeded to national musuem of s'pore to check it out. they're putting the finishing touches on this grand old dame, i loved how the new extension looks modern but yet blends in nicely w the old structure.

we just explored the place, and went into this outdoor area, i love this shot. pity the birks kinda spoilt my outfit.

after namos, we went off to singapore art museum for more culture.
the deutsche bank art exhibition was on, and we figured tt we both weren't into really visual arts. haha! by tt time it had started to pour. but we braved the rain and headed off. finally we travelled by bus to suntec, and walked to oriental hotel for some martinis and free steak sandwiches at morton's bar. yum! we then had dinner and left for clarke quay for part 3 of the day.

part 3: fantastic friends

by tt time i was pretty tired from walking the whole day, and was getting kinda cranky. tj left me at the mrt saying he had to "settle my surprise" and 5 min later i got this sms saying tt he had been "kidnapped" and ask me to go find him, leaving behind a clue. so off i went, stationed at the 1st pitstop were joce and yun who handed me the next clue. was pretty brain dead and the clue wasn't tt obvious, but thanks to super generous hints, i made it to the 2nd pitstop. station "masters" were ade and del, and finally after some guessing we made it to the lounge in crazy horse, where tj was there waiting... the place was v opulent, tons of cushions, sofas, swinging chairs and beds (i kid u not) and it was v quiet. we had drinks, cut my 2nd cake (which v incidentally was the same one from rive gauche, ade so happened to buy the exact same one). no photos as yet (yun send me the photos by yahoo pls). will update when i've got them.

fantabulous b'day. thanks to tj, my family and friends who made it so. love ya all!

snow patrol

cheryl sent me a song, snow patrol's Run. she told me it's a damn good song, so naturally i was sceptical, i mean half the song she's loves i haven't even heard b4, and it's been a long long time since i last tuned into perfect10. gosh i'm old. but yes, she's right this time. snow patrol is good. i love Chasing Cars too... but Run is far more haunting...

"Run"

I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

Slower slower
We don't have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads

Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

not bad service after all

as part of the flower-saga, tj was pissed cos the flowers arrived too early and kinda spoilt the surprise for me. i was just glad tt there were any flowers to begin w, but yah, he went to write an email indicating his displeasure:

Hi,

I refer to my order attached below.

I have indicated that the delivery to be made on 22 Oct 2006 (Sunday) and the flowers were delivered today (21 Oct 2006) instead.

This was meant to be a surprise and having paid for your services, I was expecting there not to be a problem as I have indicated my preferences very clearly. As a established flower shop, I did not anticipate this kind of misunderstanding to happen.

Just want to let you know of this screw-up and I hope that this would not happen to anyone else.

he checked his email on sunday morn but didn't receive anything, and when he checked again in the afternoon, he got this reply:

Dear Mr Lim
Very sorry for our mistake, can we send an apology bouquet for Ms Aw. Please let us know early because we are working till 1.00pm only. I had call yr mobile but is not on.
Best regards
Judy

but alas, it's already 4.30pm when he opened tt email, which means v probably tt i've missed the opportunity for a free bouquet of flowers. but yeah, kinda nice thought on their part, which sort of makes it better (i mean i was fine with getting it early, better than late/never rite?)

but being the cheapskate s'porean, i'm asking tj to cook up some sob story abt how he's overseas working, missed our anniversary so have to send flowers, but they're too early, gf disappointed think he not sincere etc. and see if i can get another bouquet on my b'day! haha.

classic buy-1-get-1-free :)

flowers!

i was upstairs minding my own business when my dad was screaming for me...

"kailing kailing! ur friend got present to give you..." x 2

i'm like huh? who give me present? so i slowly made my way downstairs (in my pjs no less)

and i saw this!

so yes the flowers were for our mthly anniversary, but they arrived one day too early... i kinda forgot abt the anniv cos was just looking forward to him coming back, but wat a lovely surprise! and yes the biggest flowers i received so far... :)

Happy b'day Adeline!

celebrated ade's b'day last nite, at the very quiet village in china sq central. hp ade was "surprised" by our not so coordinated entry and del's not v convincing acting. was fun just chatting, and after tt we adjourned to butter factory for drinks, laughs and dancing. we're officially old farts, cannot tahan clubbing for too long. shall let the photos speak for themselves.

Haven’t been updating in a while, don’t really have anything to update really. Life consists of going to work, trying like mad to read tons of stuff to come up with a little bit of stuff, going home, reading more stuff online while chatting with tj on msn/skype. Weekends are abit more fun, going shopping/spending time with my family. But hampered by the haze so we try to avoid spending too much time outdoors. Quite a fun day today, met up with colleagues from my recre committee, so we just had a nice chit-chat official meeting, and continued the chat during lunch! Haha. But yah, now tt my new colleague is in, life’s more interesting, I’m learning more and thinking better while we bounce ideas off each other. Plus got someone to gossip abt the boss with! Haha. Hope the haze and the headache tt I’m having will go away…

my (fried?) new phone

ok after much consideration and bugging my mummy, we finally went out to get my SE K610i. braved the haze and the heat and walked arnd amk centre, which interestingly didn't have many singtel authorised shops. out of 4 we went, 2 didn't have the colour i wanted, the other one didn't wanna chup us, so finally at the 4th shop i found my phone, the hpman was like v longwinded etc, explaining to my mum tons of stuff, and 2 hrs later i walked out happily w my new phone after spending SGD294 (phone: 138, SE stereo headset + extra batt + desktop charger + useless hp pouch 68, 512 M2 card 88) hmm now tt i think abt it, the extra batt desktop charger set thing was abit ex. oh well...

so i was happily charging my phone and loading songs onto my 512 card, then put in my new card and opened the file manager to test the sound quality and everything. alas, it HUNG on me. as in totally didn't work. then the screen was just flashing, super irritating, for a few minutes can? and i tried to switch the damn phone off, and no it didn't switch off, just flashed. so tj came up with the idea of pulling out the battery, i tot why not right? so i pulled it out, with the charger still in. then i realised oops, and i pulled the charger out like 2 seconds after the battery. and after tt... no matter wat i did, the phone wouldn't turn on. i got v upset, thinking tt i prob fried the damn phone... and jkaiser concurred... damn...

but then i was thinking, it wasn't tt long, and at least when i press the "power" button there's still this red light tt flashes, so shdn't be tt bad rite? maybe phones got this built in function to prevent power surges and wat not? i hope so lah...

so this morn, i went to SE service centre, and explained to them, tt i was loading my M2 card, then tried to open, then it hanged, then switched off, and can't be turned on ever again, emphasising tt i only bought the damn phone yesterday, and totally neglecting to mention tt i erm pulled out the batt. so the techies THINK it's a software problem, which i mean it's true! if it didn't hang, y the hell would i try to pull out the battery? so i'm supposed to go collect on wednesday.

and so the waiting continues. i'm feeling quite bummed by this... oh wellz... hp for the best.... thanks mich and jkaiser for saying i'm a noob... arghz... u think i want meh? sighz... i'll update once wednesday comes... fingers crossed!

the time traveller's wife

was reading this book this morning. v well written i must say, and yah, the prologue exactly describes how i feel...

Claire: It’s hard being left behind. I wait for Henry, not knowing where he is, wondering if he’s okay. It’s hard to be the one who stays.

I keep myself busy. Time goes faster that way.

I go to sleep alone, and wake up alone. I take walks. I work until I’m tired. I watch the wind play with the trash that’s been under the snow all winter. Everything seems simple until you think about it. Why is love intensified by absence?

Long ago, men went to sea, and women waited for them, standing on the edge of the water, scanning the horizon for the tiny ship. Now I wait for Henry. He vanishes unwillingly, without warning. I wait for him. Each moment that I wait feels like a year, an eternity. Each moment is as slow and transparent as glass. Through each moment I can see infinite moments lined up, waiting. Why has he gone where I cannot follow?

Questions

All the questions running through my head... With no answers in sight...

What qualifies as immature thinking?

Is one year considered temporary? How about two?

Will the past repeat itself, if it involves the same girl, but a different guy, 4 years down the road?

Am I selfish for wanting this from him, is he selfish for not doing so?

When everything else is a perfect fit, should we let one setback break us?

Are we trying hard enough? Or trying too hard?

When is enough, enough?

my sister looks like pucca!

very interesting conversation with my 2nd sis (cha's) bf (wj).

background: he was at chinatown buying 大中国mooncakes for us, then he chanced upon this pucca lantern and he immediately bought it for cha, who loved it ALOT.

very kiddy don't u think? and the worst thing, it plays music (it's a small world) when it's switched on. very loudly! che (my youngest sis) and i were quite irritated when she insists on switching it on...

WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: haha yeah she (cha) told me. don u think she looks like pucca? abit.
car says: hahaha! of all things u say she look like pucca
WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: aha why??
ca says: pucca got funny hair
WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: but they both also got small small cute cute eyes when they smile mah haha
WJ 不要无嘉可归.. says: the cheek also similar
car says: haha! ok lah... u think cute can liao
WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: haha sorry! i got her the lantern then i think u all had to put up with the song haha
car says: haha erm yah... she keeps gg arnd playing it lor... the song's a tad bit loud.
WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: yeah she also said. maybe later i'll go tape tissue over it, or unplug the music later. WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: she say last time u and her went disney land then kept singing the song
car says: haha! u dun say. last time we went disney land, v young mah... so we just keep gg to sit the small world ride. i think we took it 3 times! and snapped like damn alot of similar pics. ok tt one is my fault
WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: haha! so cute.. den cheryl leh?
car says: tt time cheryl only like maybe less than 3 years old we v young lor tt time
WJ 不要无嘉可归. says: oh ok. hahaha nothing wrong ma. 小孩子 must behave like 小孩子

so yes. my sis's bf thinks she looks like pucca, a cartoon character. let's do some comparison:

Daiso

Was at Plaza Singapura last night to have dinner with yun. Haven’t been to PS in ages, so explored the place before yun came, and ended up buying something v cute for tj to complete the whole family! Hehe. After she arrived we ate at this quaint little café situated in an antique shop, food wasn’t half bad though I wished there was a lot more of the food. Then we walked around more.

Yes Daiso is now in town! Hehe. For the uninitiated, it’s this Jap $2 shop, everything for 2 dollars! They have a gigantic outlet in IMM, but since I work in the East, no sense in me going all the way to the west right? IMM reminds me of the days when I’ll meet my mum after school or work to go grocery shopping with her at Giant. And we’ll spend an inordinate amt of time in Daiso. Fun! So yes, me and yun were just browsing through the shelves and shelves of stuff, some of them entirely frivolous, some totally not worth the money, but still fun to browse through anywayz. There was this section devoted to cutesy Sanrio products. $2 for a Hello Kitty mousepad/stickers/small container! Brought back memories of the days when we were young and Hello Kitty was so cool but so ex. Now that we’re financially independent, Hello Kitty merchandise starts becoming cheap. Bleahz. But we gritted our teeth and walked by the shelf, no point spending money on something tt will end up just gathering dust somewhere rite?

It’s very tempting to just put stuff into the basket since it’s soooo cheap. But yeah I resisted and only ended up spending 6 bucks. And I got this peanut butter gel thingie. Basically it’s peanut butter flavoured, but the consistency is a lot more liquidy, so it doesn’t stick to the roof of ur mouth. Not too bad. But yah I can get skippy peanut butter (the small bottle) at less than 2 bucks. Hehe.

So yes, counting down to the weekend! Then tj’s going off on Monday. Sighz. It’s like 1 week of high then one month of him not being around. When he’s not around, I suffer from 1 week of withdrawal symptoms, 2 weeks of getting used to it, and another week of anticipating his return… Oh well…

Fantastic Weekend

so yes, i'm back from my short getaway to Batam. was a good trip, spent time w tj just exploring a new place, enjoying and relaxing... nothing much to do in batam except chill, walk around, find things to buy, walk arnd trying to find our seafood restaurant... saying NO countless times to taxi drivers who wanna send us somewhere... all in all, relaxing and satisfying, and i return recharged though dreading coming back to reality. pictures will tell a better story i think.

ok first stop, we check into our hotel: holiday inn resort batam, a one bedroom suite which overlooks the pool. check out the living room.

after tt we proceed to our massage session at the Tea Tree Spa. quite satisfying i feel, enjoyed it thoroughly, i highly recommend spa sessions for everyone. v shiok! pics of the spa and the therapy room

i liked this spa place better than the asmara one i went in bintan, though the decor in bintan is better, it's very ex (SGD90 per pax, compared to the SGD113 we paid per pax for the spa package deal which includes the massage, room plus breakfast) so yes, batam is the poor cousin of bintan.

so yes, after tt we proceed to the city centre of batam, batam centre then nagoya to walk around. batam is pretty backward still i feel, and there's pretty much nothing to buy in the stores, and prices are also quoted in SGD at some places, meaning they're tourist traps. batam is also the first place we went without knowing much about the place, without really searching the internet for places to go to, and well they pretty much dun provide maps too, so it was just asking around, walking aimlessly... but tt adds to the fun of it too, we discovered many delightful old-school places, not to mention a supermart where we stocked up on the essential goodies like keropok! and not forgetting the most impt part! food!

Es Teler 77 (they also have branches in S'pore, @ Cineleisure i think)

Love the nostalgic glass bottles that the drinks come in. Tehbotol (bottled tea) and coke

Satay from a roadside stall. satay in indonesia is served with the gravy poured on it. only SGD3 for 20 sticks + ketupat!

Roadside stalls selling food and fruits

Next stop, our seafood dinner! Seafood is cheap in Batam, chilli crab, sambal prawns, calamari and fried kailan, for only SGD 18! and it's fresh and not msg-laden.

after tt there's nothing to do in batam, so we went back to our hotel to watch tv and chill over cheap beer. a can of tiger beer only costs abt SGD1.

next morning, we went for buffet breakfast, then went to the jacuzzi in the spa. since we signed up for the massage session yesterday, we could use the jacuzzi, it's sheltered and heated. so v shiok, we just relaxed and took photos. and since the spa was very empty, hardly any guests, so we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.

This is some balinese statue at the poolside, we happily used it as a towel rack, very funny. i took more photos of the hotel and lovely pool but i haven't uploaded it yet.

finally, some yummy pokka milk drinks tt we can't find in s'pore. the melon milk is v good!

yupyupz. all in all, i enjoyed the trip. great company (thanks dear), it wasn't tt expensive, only SGD118 per pax nett for massage plus room plus buffet breakfast... and the hotel was quiet, not many guests so it felt like we were the only ones there... it was a tad out of the way (we had to take 30-min cab ride to the city centre, cost us SGD12 each way)... but yah, nice to just relax and chill and do nothing but recharge...

but it's great cos we finally booked our batam trip! haha. first time i so super last minute, we just booked tdy and gg tm. hope for good weather (or at least no rain) and we're off to spa tm! hehe.

abit high now, better be a gd girl and go eat my medicine soon. seeya when i get back!

Memories of mid-autumn festival

Mooncake festival is coming up, was quite excited abt it until the tea party just now in my office. My boss cleverly went to buy 8 mooncakes, but there were only 7 ppl. Common sense will tell you tt it can’t be done. Not to mention he bought like double-yolk mooncakes which I don’t eat. Forced myself to eat 3 slices. Urgh. Mooncake overdose.

Going JB by bus on Sunday to buy more mooncakes. How are we gonna carry all the boxes of mooncakes while squeezing on the bus is beyond me, so I wisely volunteered the services of tj. So I also don’t have to carry so much! Hehe.

Anyway yes. Mooncake festival. It’s a nice one for me cos my mum likes to organize these mooncake gatherings with my extended family, though not much mooncakes get eaten cos the adults will gossip and play mahjong, while the younger ones will go out and play sparkles, walk arnd the neighbourhood with lanterns etc. Very fun! Those were the days. Being the dajie, I’m entrusted with the responsibility of the safety of my little cousins, so must make sure everyone’s safe. Then as years go by my little cousins are not so little anymore. But we still do this once a year, though in the recent times we always end up walking to the park with lanterns, burning them in the park, then coming home without lanterns. Destructive boys I tell you… Looking forward to this year's, though I’ll prob won’t be eating much mooncakes!

Thank Goodness it's finally coming to an end...

I'm referring to the IMF of course. well with all it's supposed benefits to singapore this event has certainly brought s'poreans TONS of inconveniences, esp those who work in the suntec area. i've been diligently avoiding tt area except last friday where i got to catch a glance of MY favourite policeman in action =)

so yes. we've gone all out of our way to make this meeting a success. now please end peacefully and let my policeman go home! until now the poor boy still doesn't know if he'll be let off tonight. let's hope for the best!

mooncake party later. gonna be overdose i tell u...

which phone shd i get?

i need (ok more like want) a new phone. lost my phone on a cab a few mths back =( and never gotten arnd to getting a new one, so was getting by on my old Sony Ericsson T610i, which though is laggy, and has a sucky camera, was pretty chock-full of features for a phone of tt time, bluetooth connectivity among others... but then again i dun really use all of the cool features there...

so yes, current phone lemmings have been reduced to two: both SEs, bad experience with my lost samsung phone of less than 3 mths, maybe not fated with samsung, plus i found their user interfaces not as friendly as SE (maybe i was just too used to SE le) so yah presenting the two models: SE K610i and SE K800i.

SEK610i

specifications
user reviews

pros: cheap ($138 for singtel with some yellowpages buying guide magnetic strip (i don't have this, anyone have this to spare? please?), 2Mp camera, expandable memory, sleek-looking...
cons: no radio, not as chock full of features like the K800i

SEK800i
specifications
user reviews
pros: 3.2M camera! w red eye reduction, xenon flash, best-pic (which is good for taking 8 simultaneous shots, after which u choose only 1 to save) comes with free 256 M2 card, radio etc. tons of features like photoblogging etc which will come in handy IF i so choose to use them
cons: no optical zoom (erm this is still a phone), pricey ($398), looks bulky

how ah? for one, i erm not so tech-savvy to use all the features, but then a 3.2M cameraphone really is too zai le. but then for the price difference (of abt $260) i can get an ipod nano, or top up abit more to get a digital camera... how ah? tough... comments please?

what my name means

There are 8 letters in your name.
Those 8 letters total to 36
There are 3 vowels and 5 consonants in your name.

Your number is: 9

The characteristics of #9 are: Humanitarian, giving nature, selflessness, obligations, creative expression.

The expression or destiny for #9:
The expression that you exhibit is represented bythe number 9. Your talents center in humanistic interests and approaches. You like to help others as you were intended to be the 'big brother or big sister' type. You operate best when you follow your feelings and sense of compassion, and allow yourself to be sensitive to the needs of others. You work well with people, and have the potential to inspire. This suggests that you could successfully teach or counsel. Creative ability, imagination and artistic talent (often latent) of the highest order are present in this expression. It's possible that you're not using or developing all of these capabilities at this time. Some of your talents may have been used at an earlier time in your life, and some may still be latent. Be aware of your capabilities, so that you can make use of them at appropriate times.

If you are able to achieve the potential of your natural expression in this life, you are capable of much human understanding and have a lot to give to others. Your personal ambitions are likely to be maintained in a very positive perspective, never losing sight of an interest in people, and a sympathetic, tolerant, broad-minded and compassionate point of view. You are quite idealistic, and disappointed at the lack of perfection in the world. You have a strong awareness of your own feeling as well as those of others. Friendships, affection, and love are extremely important.

Undeveloped or ignored, the negative side of the 9 expression can be very selfish and self-centered. If you do not actively involve yourself with work that benefits others, you may tend to express just the opposite characteristics. It is your role to be very involved with other people and their needs, but it may be difficult for you achieve this role. Aloofness, lack of involvement, and a lack of sensitivity mark the low road of this expression.

Your Soul Urge number is: 11

A Soul Urge number of 11 means:
With the 11 Soul Urge, much of your thinking and interests relate to the abstract, the spiritual, and utopian dreams. You are motivated toward idealistic concepts, and the sharing of your ideas and concepts with humanity. This number is not one that is giving in a material or a practical sense, but rather one who desires to help mankind with a more abstract commodity such as religion, spiritualism, occult studies, or even psychic abilities.

If you possess the positive 11 Soul Urge traits, you have a dream of the perfect world; you are highly idealistic and inspirational. Your inner strength and devotion to your beliefs are extremely strong. You have a very good mind that is especially well equipped to handle the higher, more abstract forms of thought.

If there is an excess of 11 energy in your makeup, you may possess some the negative 11 traits. There is a tendency for the 11 to produce considerable amounts of nervous tension which is bought on by a very high level of awareness. You may be too sensitive and overly emotional. In some cases, these sensitivities and emotions are quite repressed, and this tends to add even more to the sense of nervousness in the makeup.

The strong 11 is not a very practical person because of the extreme idealism; often, there is a degree of self-deception present. There is usually a rather fixed idea of right and wrong held by those showing strong 11 traits, and with this very often is a resulting attitude of inflexibility.

Your Inner Dream number is: 7

An Inner Dream number of 7 means:
You dream of having the opportunity to read, study, and shut yourself off from worldly distractions. You can see yourself as a teacher, mystic, or ecclesiastic, spending your life in the pursuit of knowledge and learning.

hmm... does tt mean i shd change jobs and go be a teacher? someone pls tell me if it's accurate. i dun really think so. but then i did tj's and found his v accurate. hmm...

anyway if you wanna try, click here. then tell me how your’s goes

Been thinking a lot abt this issue lately – The balance btwn work and life. How do you really achieve tt?

So far my work doesn’t require me to stay late, though I do bring home less critical work/reading material. My boss is alright abt this, and seeing how freaking far away my workplace is, I’d much rather go home on time thankyewverymuch. I’m lucky in tt sense, I don’t get paid much but at least I don’t have to work long hours, which compensates it IMHO. Of course I also have colleagues in other Div/Dept who work late, like till 8pm kinds, and since a lot of ppl in my grade tend to stay back, I sometimes feel like a slacker for going home on time.

But yah, how does work take the life out of you? Two ways: 1) requiring you to work insane hours 2) requiring you to go overseas…

I guess the insane hours is self-explanatory, you work late, go back late, miss out on spending time with ur family/friends/pet/google box etc. hence you don’t have a life, unless you really absolutely LURRVE your job then in which case it becomes your life.

The 2nd point requires abit more explanation. For some, (and even for me) getting posted overseas is a fantastic opportunity, you get to go a foreign land to absorb their culture, work with ppl of varying nationalities, learn a lot more abt yourself, living expenses included. Plus not to mention tt it’ll look great in your CV as well. But yet at the same time, you lose out on your family, friends and even the great food in this little red dot/island. And if you have a significant other, it makes a huge strain on your r/s no matter how strong it was before. Trust me on this one. Have been thru two long distance r/s, one didn’t make it, the current one is going to be on and off indefinitely…

I guess it depends on your priorities in life. Which makes it hard because we tend to measure our self-worth by comparing with other ppl. Currently, I feel like I’m not doing well because I don’t need to do OT, I’m not as busy as a lot of other ppl and hence I’m not useful, kinda morbid/masochistic but it’s true.

Bah. Am rambling on and on and am going totally out of point. I hate tt my brain doesn’t function well these days. It sucks when I just go blank when my boss asks me something, but if someone else asks me I am able to answer (even if I have no idea wat’s going on, I still have some sense in pretending tt I know wat I’m talking abt) Must be going senile/lack of mental stimulation. .

Arghz…

... ...

words elude me...

have this weird knot in my stomach tt refuses to go away. it's late but i'm not switching off the lights to go sleep yet, cos i'm afraid of the tears that will come... it's already welling up somewhere, threatening...

how shd i put it? i'm happy he's back, but yet... it's just... i dunno how to put it. i know he tries and i know how he feels towards me. but i also know tt this will be a long road of being by myself, of being strong, of not being to share alot of things with him. and this might be very far ahead, but i also dun want my kids to grow up wishing their daddy could spend more time with them...

maybe i shd just get used to it... i know it's hard. was talking to my trainee oil trader friend, who was still at work at 10pm on a friday. he stays in late very frequently and while he's gg to work or gg back he still takes readings home... and i ask him wat his gf feels abt all this... and he says she's v unhappy abt it. but then he loves his job and he feels tt he can be good at it, and therein lies the dilemma. and it sounds oh so familiar, because i'm at the receiving end, and i know it's hard. but it's also hard to have to wait, to put my life on hold because i really dunno where u'll be next mth, or whether u'll be spending my b'day w me... and tt sucks, ALOT

saying this here cos i dunno where else to. and probably i'll be feeling better tm. but yeah, maybe this is life and i shd just get used to it... don't feel bad abt this, i'm not trying to make u feel bad. i support u in ur career aspirations, i really do... and i'm trying too...

=)

Suddenly blogging has become part of my daily routine. Wonder how long it’ll last. Happy happy happy! Tj’s back, a little paler than before (his mum and my mum say he grow fatter! Haha damn funny) and he came back with lots of stuff for me and my family. Very thoughtful of him so was quite touched. Thanks dear, you didn’t have to bring so much stuff back but I’m glad you did.

Just glad tt he’s home. Don’t feel like working today cos leaving for airport at 10 for some simulation test, then after tt I’m going to high tea buffet! Half day but then the test is prob gonna drag so will eat into my half day.

Ok till then!

lunchtime appraisal?

2nd post in a day. Need to get this off my chest. Went for lunch with Boss (B), he drove out to Changi Village then we ate at some Jap food place, the food was ok lah, not fantastic… So only me and B today, then at first we talking abt work. Fine. I don’t like really that, but what else to talk to him about? Then later he started asking me tons of questions. Like what do I think about a particular work issue, how do I find my job/workplace etc. The 2nd question abit hard to answer, I mean I like my job, but I don’t love it, I wish certain things were different abt this job, abt my company, abt my pay, but I’m all right with it in general, was trying DAMN hard to be politically correct and finding smart things to say, but difficult to do tt while I was trying to eat a hot bowl of noodle soup. (I mean common etiquette is not to talk when you’re chewing right?) Then he just kept asking lor, so many questions that I can’t even reproduce them here. Which got really tiresome, lunch is supposed to be relaxing! Not stressful! hy calls it lunchtime appraisal. which isn't tt off the mark if you ask me...

Starting to feel like maybe B doesn’t think much of me or the way I work/the quality of my work, and I feel… sianz and lost… sighz…
Dreary wet morning (again) but at least it wasn’t pouring so it’s not that bad. Kinda sleepy still but it’s slowly wearing off. Meeting SVP later. I hope to get it over and done with already, but he’s just too busy so it keeps getting rescheduled. Happy happy happy cos TJ’s coming back! As I speak his plane is probably taking off etc. So by this evening I’ll get to see him!

Kept watching the Terry Fox Run 2006 advertisement on TV last night, thought it’ll be a good idea to join. Any takers? So far yun has expressed interest. Let me know if you are! It’s on 17 Sept at Sentosa. For more details, click here.

Arghz, the morning is going really slowly. Quick quick come back!

10 reasons I’m glad it’s a Monday

1)Because I woke up 10 min later, I get to sleep an additional 10 min.
2)Since I forgot to bring my work files (I brought them home to work over the weekend) I don’t have to do them today.
3)I’m “off” from 2pm ‘cos of briefing session and meeting my SVP.
4)I get to meet SVP and have to update him abt some of my progress.
5)Another busy week ahead which means time passes by faster.
6)There’s America’s Next Top Model tonight.
7)One week before IMF, so one week closer to the end of all in-your-face “please smile more to ang mohs” campaign.
8)Less than 2 months to my b’day! *hint*
9)I’m on half day on Wed, going high tea buffet! Suggestions anybody?
10)One more day till he comes back! Yippeeeee!

Finally I feel useful

lotsa Mgmt Committee and Board meetings coming up, so been busy writing papers, chasing ppl for status etc. suddenly the arrows come left right and centre. feels good to be useful and busy, time passes faster and i do feel a sense of satisfaction, but oh well, the downside is tt sometimes i tend to get stressed and let everything just overwhelm me, and take it out on tj. sorry dear...

dreary weather, raining yesterday evening and the whole of today! this morn i just wanted to roll in my bed and sleep, but too bad, had tons to do... and i want to take leave next week to rest and go out with tj. 4 or 5 more days! (depends on when exactly he gets to come back lah)

nothing much interesting to blog abt cos v guai always coming home after work to look at work again... oh wellz... haven't been watching much tv too, though i did manage to catch the final episode of project runway. love tt show, love the winner chloe and the clothes she design look fantastic! i guess i'm a big fan of elegant, classy looking evening wear kind clothes, dun like the funky ones too much... check out her write-up, she sounds v passionate abt wat she does. which is more than wat alot of us (including me) can say...

i'm blogging for the sake of blogging i guess. 4 or 5 more days!

brand new look

was sick of the old template since alot of ppl had it, didn't really like the title as well, so it's time for a change.

some of u might find this template familiar, well it's the same one as the smiles one. i chose tt template cos it looks bright and cheery, and i love the extended width so my posts don't look excessively long. and the fonts are bigger too!

changed the title too. modified from one of my fave songs, dancing in the moonlight by toploader. i never fail to smile and cheer up everytime i hear it...

bear with me as i fiddle with the scripts and wat not. someone tell me wat's RSS feed (i'm just an amateur blogger lah). comments/helpful additions welcome!

been busy

well kl was concerned, so i better write an entry. life's fine, been on 11 day orientation, which was fun yet boring. it's boring to sit thru 11 days of mini-lectures, with diff ppl telling u abt wat their dept does... after a while it either gets too technical/chim/boring and at diff times of the day diff ppl will take turns to nod off. but fun cos we get to officially slack, have 2 hour lunch breaks, go around to places tt v few ppl get to go, like the hangars, the apron area of airport, various control centres etc. gonna miss the camaderie of slackers and the slacking process too...

other than tt have been meeting up with friends, esp my jc mates, haven't seen them in a long time esp lynn, who's nice as ever. met up with ps too, she seems unhappy with her job, sighz, do hope she cheers up and hang on in there...

went jb to dye my hair, RM150 plus cut plus treatment, it's now a lovely mahogany brown. and yah they spent like half hour just to blowdry it into curls lor. good svc lah, but took damn long. hehe. happy with my hair!

back to work tm, abit sianz, but yah have to work hard le, cannot slack anymore with all the committee meetings coming up. 9 more days...

Wednesday, August 16, 2006

goodbye and see you again

never easy saying goodbye, especially to someone who means alot to you, though it's only three weeks (plus 2 weeks of stay-in reservist after tt). do take care in a foreign land, be extra careful when dealing with the chinese and yah, beware of ANY china girls who so much as look in your direction! (paranoid)

so yes, after saying "goodbye", there's always the exciting "see you again" bit. so i'll see you in 3 weeks, have a safe flight both ways, take care and yes, i'll take care of myself too, dun worry...

happy 2nd year in advance

looking backwards and forward

just a re-cap of my weekend:

Friday: went to camp out at esplanade to chope seats for the whole bunch of us to catch the pretty fireworks by team new caledonia (wth is tt country?) was lots of fun, fireworks were amazing (though i still liked team italy's one alot better) and even managed to catch up with jiaxin and ade's friend lifen. we adjourned to DXO after tt, ok lah, free entry and free drinks for ladies, so i'm not complaining, just wished tt ppl were more spontaneous and go dance on the dance floor, rather than hang around it waiting for someone to start the ball rolling. happy b'day jiaxin! hp u enjoyed it spending it with us cheapos who go unhappening places to drink free drinks! yun pass me the pics soon! tj gave me this lovely and sweet present. love it to bits. thank you dear!

Saturday: blading at noon, still arnd the same speed but i'm proud to note tt i didn't fall down this time! lazed arnd at tj's house then went to taka to eat Crystal Jade Ginseng Chicken BBQ! yummy and way too much food! haha, i want to link it in this post, but blogger doesn't allow tt somehow, so just go "eat's all F.A.T.E" from the sidebar to check it out!

to whet your appetite

sunday: spent the afternoon at home watching tv, helping dad out, chatting with family etc. went serangoon garden market to buy 100 sticks of katong satay (i swear this is MUCH better than city satay, the gravy is so yummy and comes with lots of peanuts!) then we proceeded to tj's house for a gathering, his parents old friends were back from England, a Duke Lieutanent (one ranking lower than Lord)! haha i know royalty! and the family tt took care of tj when he was in Calgary also came. to celebrate the arrival of royalty, auntie xiang lian made this super yummilicious laksa! she made the laksa gravy, fish balls and fish cake from scratch! fantastic i tell u, no wonder she doesn't like to go outside to eat. too bad i dun have any pics of it to post. and as usual there was popiah and too much food, so i tabao alot home. haha. why? cos my fridge got more space than tj's house.

week ahead: won't be seeing me on msn much, cos i'm on orientation the whole of the next two weeks, just going arnd various locations/depts to hear them talk abt themselves and learn more abt the organisation as a whole. interesting to meet so many ppl but i swear it's more draining than actually working. tj's going to china sometime on wednesday. flight and all not confirmed yet, but his boss is adamant so i guess yah he's going. he's not gonna be arnd for our 2nd year anniv though =( but gotta get used to not having him arnd le. and be strong. for him and for me.

Re-connecting

Wonderful picnic at east coast yesterday evening, but we only realized quite late that this year we can’t see fireworks from east coast cos parade is at stadium and not padang (last year we managed to catch fireworks at east coast). Doesn’t stop it from being a lovely night, bright round moon, strong sea breeze, and yummy (too much) food. Great feeling to just lie there, relax, laugh at each other’s jokes and silliness, and enjoying each other’s company. Top tt off with a refreshing ice-cold Tiger beer and our evening is complete. Ooh and I had yummy cookies spelt out in my name waiting for me at home! Thanks Yun! I've ate CAR, now LIN is left for tea break hehe.

Not that we weren’t connected lah, just like batteries, we also need to recharge our r/s also. Hehe. And yes, simple acts like peeling longans and removing the seeds for me just melt my heart (he also peels prawns for me lor…)

Yes, I’m a lucky girl =)

Smiles

Friends and I have come up with a photoblog site, Smiling People are Happy. I can’t seem to add links to my entries in the office, so please refer to the sidebar for the link. We’re still having teething problems so please be patient. Will advertise for it more when the blog is more presentable. Darn it I really should learn how to use photoshop (or at least just get the bloody software first).

Was scrolling through random blogs (due to absolute boredom) and looking at pictures of smiling people. And realized that the camera, like the mirror can be unforgiving. While the mirror reveals imperfections like wrinkles, the camera reveals in tt split second, the general mood of the person. Yes, we usually smile when we pose for pictures, but yet there can be many different kinds of smiles: genuine beaming ones, wry, sinister, with a tinge of uncertainty/sadness/confusion etc.

Remember watching a documentary on Discovery eons ago, can’t even remember the title. It was interesting, they looked at the photos of high school girls in their yearbook. One girl was beaming, radiant and in her eyes you could tell she was looking forward to a bright future filled with happiness. The other girl was smiling no doubt, but there was this tinge of sadness and cynicism that was apparent even to me, the television viewer.

So after forty years these women were now in their fifties, and Discovery tracked them down, and interviewed them to ask what happened in their lives etc.

The first old lady married her high school sweetheart soon after graduation, supported him thru med school, stayed home and took care of their children who have since grown up and started their own families. She and her husband have a loving relationship with a close-knit family, and from the interview the look from her eyes, the same radiant look was still there, even though her face was now lined with experience. She was at peace with herself.

The second one married too, but it was a tumultuous relationship that ended in divorce, and she ended up having to single-handedly bring up her children, who eventually became delinquent/criminal etc. (you have to pardon my memory, but the gist is there) During the interview you could tell she became this cynical old lady, but you can’t blame her cos her life wasn’t smooth-sailing.

The conclusion from that was that even though your mouth is smiling, it is the eyes you need to focus on to tell if the person is genuinely smiling and happy. And you can tell/predict the outcome of a person’s life just by looking at his/her eyes during a snapshot.

I totally agree with the first statement. When I look at photos from the past when I was going through unhappy moments, though I was smiling there was still this sad look in my eyes, and because of tt I didn’t look pretty. (it was a makeover shoot, I had perfect hair and makeup but I still didn’t look good and couldn’t relax during the shoot. Photographer said I looked fierce in a lot of shots, I agreed.) During happier times, I had this radiant look in my photos (quote tj, I don’t make stuff like this up). I think the smiley happy eyes still can be detected in majority of my photos (correct me if I’m wrong)

For the second statement, well I find that a hasty judgment. We all have off days in which we’re tired/sad/not feeling well, and naturally that will affect our mood during the day of the photo-taking. But I also do notice tt some of my friends tend not to smile, or not smile widely in their photos. Please do! It makes you look younger, prettier and happier. And guys, I dunno why but they just dunno how to smile.

S.M.I.L.E! It makes the world a brighter place.

(as you can tell, I’m bored, hence this unnecessarily long essay)

how close shd u get?

interesting weekend to say the least. blading again on sat morn. am please to note tt i am improving. all i need to learn now is to figure out how to stop. very impt skill i tell u.

so yes, a series of circumstances led me to end up watching fireworks with tj and his family. in total there were 7 of us. tj and i went earlier to chope seats, pretty good ones i might add, but yah, after a whole lot of unhappy incidents i've finally figured out tt becoming too close to his family is never good. they are nice ppl and they like me and treat me well, and i've always been taught to respect my elders, not to mention tt they're tj's parents, but yet...

i mean i eat dinner with them at their house once in a while. i get invited to family functions, we go to east coast park tgt once in a while, go shopping even... but yah, when the family starts to interfer with my alone time with tj, then i guess we shd start getting worried... this has happened b4, but i guess i never really learnt my lesson. doesn't make me respect them less, for taking care of tj and producing such a fine young man... and i dun wanna take him away from them, but yet there has to be a balance, or it'll be v unhealthy for our r/s.

so yes, please understand when i say tt i don't wanna spend tt much time with ur family. they mean alot to u and i understand tt totally. but yah, i guess u know wat i mean...

National Day Month

in s'pore, national day holiday is only one day, august 9. once an impt day for me, once a day to cause me anguish, now a day for me to enjoy fireworks. ever since maybe 2 or 3 years ago, s'pore started having this fireworks festival every august, getting teams from different parts of the world to come up with brilliant fireworks display, ever since tt the fireworks festival has been sort of a staple, and in true s'pore spirit, every year sees teams trying to outdo the previous one. not tt i'm actually complaining, i LOVE fireworks, the transient beauty, the way it lights up the entire sky, the way it can make the young and the elderly stop and go WOW... and the way the scent of smoke lingers after the performance, reminding you tt something amazing just happened, making you just want more... but of course the giam siap part of me always wonders how much $$$ the gahmen is spending on all these...

but this is not really a post on fireworks, though i suspect in the days to come there'll be alot of pictures of fireworks... but yah, my National Day month just started, was a busy week this week, 1 management committee meeting, 1 board meeting (so in like 2 days i got to see ALOT of big shots and even attend a meeting with CEO in the posh board room...)wed attended training with management pilots (quite a cool bunch who don't always talk politically correctly), with smaller fries (who are oh so funny), attended fire warden course (fire chemistry, classes of fires, types of extinguishers, evacuation of paths, and how to operate a fire extinguisher (fun but i suck at tt btw)) and now it's friday!!! boss not arnd cos he's conducting training, so tt's y i'm happily blogging now.

will be happily free the next three weeks, as in dunnid to do work. next week my boss and secretary all on leave, she's going to cape town with her family for holiday! *envy* so i'm the only person left to jaga the whole dept. following two weeks i'm on orientation, so will just go arnd different places to visit and find out more abt the operations of this gigantic organisation, hopefully tt makes me feel more like i belong. it's so freaking huge tt it takes a while for me to get used to, but it's getting better liao...

the weekend is here! more fireworks, national day holiday next week etc, so tt shd be fun. too bad my family not organising our annual national day bbq this time arnd cos of bad timing... cos for the longest time i've been associating national day with bbq! hehe... i just love food.

speaking of food, friend and i have started a food blog. it's still in it's initial stages, and i haven't actually posted anything yet. the link is in the sidebar, so go check it out if u're free. and if any of u are interested to contribute, feel free to contact me, then i'll pass u the passwords and wat not. food is good, but makes me spend money!!! and i need to save up for a gift for a special person later this mth... suggestions anybody?

NDP Preview

haha ok kinda late post, but it's kinda a busy week, tiring but super fun weekend...

went for NDP preview on Saturday, was part of NDP 1999 (back in J1), but was never part of the audience. Cha managed to get tics for 4, so it was cha, wj (her bf), cheryl and me. was fun getting there, seeing huge masses of ppl wearing red. on ndp day, whoever wearing red IS going to the stadium...

i'm not gonna comment much of the parade, cheryl and i were pretty bored during the pre-parade segments and much of the contingent march-passes. boring lah, hot, kinda hungry, dun dare to drink too much water cos don't wanna go to portaloo or super dirty toilet. you get my drift... but yes, being part of the kallang wave for the first time is a wonderful feeling.

after the parade started, which by tt i mean the actual shows + colourful costumes + lights + fireworks spectacular, i started to get more trigger happy. which is good and bad, while i got pictures it meant tt i couldn't enjoy and soak in the entire atmosphere to the max. but it was nice to see all the sparkling torchlights in the dark swaying to the national day songs... i still like the classic ones like count on me s'pore, stand up for s'pore and my fave: Home (by kit chan) never fails to make me all emotional inside.

pics!!!!!

some woman on a balloon, v graceful

parachutes with red trailing smoke (i dunno if this is the correct direction though, it looks like maybe it's the wrong way up)

lots of ppl wearing red in the kallang stadium, the last time ndp will be held here

flag flying past during national anthem

some b'day cake thingie, it so happened tt the middle fireworks came up when i pressed the button

my fave fireworks picture of the night. learnt the hard way not to ever use flash...

after NDP i had to rush off to zouk to meet yun, ade, del and jas... tj was supposed to pick me up at paya lebar mrt after we make our way there. alas, we took 1 bloody hour to walk to kallang mrt (too many wrong turns following wrong directions from well-meaninged matas) so it was a mad rush to bathe, get dressed, have dinner etc. then rush there b4 11 (if not no free entry). overall a fun experience, got quite high drinking long island ice tea cos i kept losing in the drinking games we played. haha. music at phuture was those cute jappy kinds, v hard to dance to but we couldn't resist coming up with kawaii moves... and at zouk it was slightly better but we were close to this gang indians so we ended up imitating their bollywood moves! and i think they caught us doing tt a couple of times (so paiseh) old liao, dun like to dance to strange sounding music, so we adjourned to checkers for supper. first real food for the day. all in all a hectic but fun saturday! so much so tt i didn't have any energy for sunday at all... zzzzzzzzz
